TikTok ads come in a number of formats, and you’ll find them throughout your time scrolling through the app. They usually use videos to promote a product or service but can be used to boost brand awareness, share reviews and gain new followers and sales leads. TikTok ads pop up in a user's feed while they’re scrolling through organic videos on their For You Page, typically taking up the full screen of their phones.

You can choose a range of TikTok advertising options. You can start off with just a single TikTok ad or create a TikTok ad Group with a range of ads relating to the same topic or theme. Or, you can create a TikTok Campaign, which is a collection of TikTok ad groups. Your TikTok Campaign can include a variety of your products or have different key goals behind each Group.

There are plenty of benefits to adding TikTok marketing to your advertising routine. The first is that there are over 1 billion monthly active users, 8.5 million of which are in Australia. The total time the average TikTok user spent on the app per month averaged 24 hours. This makes it a huge opportunity to reach more people, including new international customers.

The age demographic of TikTok is heavily weighted towards Gen Z, around 62% of TikTok users are between the ages of 10 and 29. TikTok also found that one in two Gen Z users are likely to buy something while they’re using the app, while 81% of all users discover new brands and products through TikTok.

As with many digital advertising options, the cost is variable and similar to Google ads and Facebook, TikTok marketing uses a bidding system. Pricing starts at $10 CPM (which is cost per 1,000 impressions) along with a minimum spend of $500 per campaign. You’ll then be able to choose how much you’re willing to spend per view, impression or click. There’s also the option to adjust your bids once your campaign is up and running, ensuring you can maximise your reach without over (or under) spending.

TikTok marketing is hugely diverse, and there are a number of ways you can advertise on this mammoth app. The first is, of course, the humble TikTok Video Ad. A classic option that looks like a regular TikTok but comes with a link to a product or has a CTA for gaining new subscribers or sign-ups.

Spark Ads are another option. If you have an organic video on your account that’s doing really well, you can boost it as an ad. You can also use this same method with other people’s content if you have their permission. Whether someone on TikTok has created a great review or walkthrough of your product, you can utilise that to increase your reach.

TopView ads are short-form ads that TikTok users will see when they first open the app. They’re by default set to ‘interaction on’, meaning if someone taps the screen rather than scrolls by, they’ll automatically go to the web page you’ve linked to the ad.

You don’t need to stick with video only - there are also options like TikTok Image ads and Carousel ads. Carousel ads can be swiped through, with each photo able to have its own unique caption, too. They’re very similar to how you’d advertise on Instagram with static posts.

For something more interactive, you can try Playable ads and Branded filters. Playable ads allow users to play a game you’re showcasing before downloading it. Branded filters are an incredible opportunity to get your brand out there, with filters that let people see products on themselves - whether that’s a lipstick shade or simply a fun effect that makes creators' videos look better.
